Sarah,

This song really showcases your vocal abilities. I love the Chorus! I also enjoy the visuals that I get from this song. It has a very simple and classic country sound to it. The guitar and background vocals that I hear in the chorus are perfect. What really makes this song are all the subtle details that it has. It has the ability to be filled with cliche, but you managed to stay away from much of them. To me this song has a nice refreshing sound to it.  I am really excited to see what others think!

Great to have you on Frettie!

Sarah,

The simplicity and beauty of this song just blew me away. I love everything about it - your voice, the story, the harmony, the guitar tracks. Really good job. And, for me, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Sarah,

I’ll admit it. I just cried to this song while hearing it for the first time. The imagery is beautiful. There are so many authentic moments. Amazing.

Simply sharing my emotional response may not be very helpful to you. I’m sure you’ve heard similar reactions to this song a hundred+ times. So.

What I did was listen through this song a second time with the volume all the way up on my speakers, and put some fans in the room to sort of muffle the sound around me. I’m distracted, but I can still hear your words, if they “pull me” emotionally, or catch my attention.

So here’s what I heard:

My baby picked up a map… and said let’s take this out of town… to where the river widens out.

And all along the road were picket fences, hidden driveways with tin mail boxes… white-washed houses.

Can that be us someday?

Growing old… Full of life… Little home… At the end of the day we lay down side by side.

Can that be us someday?

Further out we went, the wider the road got, as we rounded every curve.

From neighbors… to miles and miles of open earth…

And all the pieces of a life that I’d hope for, were rolling by us, on the other side of the car door*

The kind of happiness two people work their whole life for**

Can that be us someday?

Growing old… Full of life… Little home all our own

Well, we’re still young and we’ve got love.

Growing old… Full of life… Little home all our own

Sarah,

I liked it so much I listened again. The first line drew me in and had me wanting to know more. It painted emotional word pictures in my mind as you described your road trip. Good hook! A few of the words were a little hard to understand. All in all a very well written song with good vocals, good harmony and a nice guitar track. I liked it a lot!

@Dennis, thank you so much! I really love the community here.

@Dick, thank you so much!!

@Joey, you are amazing, thank you so much for the detailed listen and feedback. I’m so thrilled to hear the song moved you, but I’m so sorry it made you cry!!

@Jim, thanks!! Were some of those words hard to understand because of they way they’re sung, or the mix? That would be great to know.

Thanks again everyone for listening and taking the time to comment!

Sarah, I listened again and I guess it’s just the mix that’s keeping me from hearing every word clearly. I sent a suggestion to the sitemaster asking if maybe they would provide a way that we could upload the lyrics to our songs. Anyway, great job and great song!

Not sure I can help you much with this song. It’s great! It reminds me of something that would be written by The Band Perry. They have a way of drawing you in with imagery and making their situation feel like you’ve been there.

That’s what a good song does. It makes me feel the emotion along with you.

I’d like to echo what others have said. You took something that could come across as cliche and avoided that entirely. Some of the words you are singing are a little unclear. The chorus comes across strong and clear. I’d like to see another instrument in the chorus…maybe some fiddle at the beginning and then fade out.

This is one of the better songs, in my opinion, that I’ve came across thus far.

Joey’s comment is right on. But for me it strikes a beautifully emotional chord because it brings me back to being 20 again with my wife of 20 years now. That’s what tells me this song will be a hit for its universal appeal.

Write an ending though, that makes a memorable impact.
